Reabsorption and Secretion Flashcards
How are substances reabsorbed?
Carrier mediated transport systems
If carriers are at maximum transport capacity what happens to excess substrate?
Excreted in urine
Where does sodium reabsorption occur?
Proximal tubule
What does the rate of reabsorption of non actively reabsorbed solutes depend on?
Amount of water removed
Permeability of membrane to solute
What is the normal value for ECF K+?
4mmoles/L
What happens if K+ increases too much?
Hyperkalaemia, decreased resting membrane potential of excitable cells and eventually ventricular fibrillation and death
What happens if K+ decreases too much?
Hypokalaemia, increases resting membrane potential of excitable cells, hyperpolarizes muscle and cardiac cells, cardiac arrhythmias, death
How is K+ secretion regulated?
Aldosterone
