Reflexes Flashcards
1
Q
What is a reflex?
A
An involuntary stereotypical response that may involve one Afferent (sensory) and efferent (motor) across a single synapse
2
Q
What needs to be intact for a reflex to occur?
A
- Sensory nerve fibers
- Spinal cord synapse
- Motor nerve fibers
- Neuromuscular junction
- Muscle fibers
3
Q
What are the steps to a reflex happening?
A
- Tap the tendon
- Tapping activated a special sensory fiber
- A sensory impulse was triggered
- The impulse travels to the spinal cord, via peripheral nerve
- The stimulated sensory fiber synapses directly with the anterior horn cell innervating the same muscle
- The impulse will then cross the neuromuscular junction
- Muscle contracts
4
Q
What are the DTR?
A
- Triceps = C6,7
- Brachioradialis= C5,6
- Biceps= C5, C6
- Knee= L,2,3,4*
- Achilles’ tendon=sacral 1
