*progressive loss of cartilage
*osteophyte formation at edges of cartilage
What is the most common place for OA to occur
- Knees
- Hips
- Cervical / lumbar spine
- Wrists (1 CMC joint)
- Hands (DIP joint)
Where are heberdens nodes located
DIP joints
*OA
Where are Bouchard nodes located
PIP joint
*OA or RA
What type of onset is OA
Insidious
*often unilateral
When is joint pain worse in OA morning or later in the day
Joint panini is worse later in the day
*morning stiffness is common typically lasts 30 minutes or less
Is erythema common in OA
There is no inflammatory findings with OA
*no systemic symptoms
What are the components of RA
- Inflammatory
*involves synovial membranes primarily and bone cartilage coverage secondarily - MC hands (PIP and MCP joints), feet (MTP joints)
- Systemic involvement
- Insidious onset
What will develop on the fingers (RA)
- Boutonnières
- Swan neck deformities
When is stiffness worse (RA)
Worse in the mornings and after inactivity
*lasts longer than OA
*will be tender and warm
What are the systemic symptoms of RA
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Low fever
