REDOX I AND REDOX II Flashcards
How do you set up an electrochemical cell?
1) Obtain the metals and clean them.
2) Wash the netals’ surface with propanine to remove the grease.
3) Place each metal into a solution containing the ion of the same metal.
4) Make a salt bridge from filter paper soaked in saturated KNO3. This should be linking the 2 beakers and the salt bridge should be submerged in each beaker.
5) Connect the electrodes with wires, crocodile clips, and a voltmeter. A reading will appear if it’s set up correctly.
What is a half cell?
One half of an electrochemical cell
Is it true that in an electrochemical cell electrons will always flow from a more reactive metal to a less reactive metal?
Yes
Is it true that all electrode potentials are written on the reduced form, with electrons on the left hand side ?
Yes
What is used as a reference to measure the standard electrode potentials?
The Standard Hydrogen Electrode
What is the voltage of S.H.E?
0V
What are standard conditions?
- 298K
- 100kPa pressure
- Conc of ions at 1 mol dm^-3
