Equilibrium Flashcards
What is Kc?
The equilibrium constant
What can be used to work out kc?
The concentration of each substance at equilibrium
Why aren’t solids and liquids included in the kc expression?
Because the concentrations of solids and liquids remains constant throughout the reaction
What can be used to work out kc if not all the concentrations at equilibrium have been given?
ICE ( Initital moles, Change in moles, Equilibrium Moles)
What is the total pressure in a reaction?
The sum of all the pressures of the individual gases (partial pressures)
What is the equation for the mole fraction of a gas?
Mole fraction of a gas= number of moles of gas/ total number of moles of gas in the mixture
What is the equation for partial pressure?
Partial pressure= mole fraction of a gas X total pressure in mixture
What are the units for partial pressure?
KPa
What can be used to calculate Kp?
The partial pressures
What is Kp?
The gas equilibrium constant
What is le chatelier’s principle?
That if a reaction at equilibrium is subjected to a change in pressure, temperature or concentration, the position of equilibrium will move to counteract or oppose the change
Do catalysts have an effect on the position of equilibrium?
No
If a temperature change causes equilibrium to shift to the right, what will happen to kp?
Kp will increase
If a temperature change causes equilibrium to shift to the left, what will happen to kp?
Kp will decrease
Is Kp affected by changes in pressure?
No
