what is the meaning of recruitment
process from identifying that the business needs to employ someone up to the point at which applications hv arrived at the business
what is employee selection
process of evaluating candidates for a specific job and selecting an individual for employment based on the needs of an organisation
what are the 6 categories HR is in charge in
recruitment and selection, wages and salary, health and safety, industrial relation, redundancy and dismissal and training
what is the recruitment process
vacancy arises - job analysis - job description- job specification-job advertisement- application form - interview and selection - vacancy filled
what is job analysis
identifies and record the responsibilities and task relating to a job
what is job description
outlines the responsibilities and duties to be carried out by someone employed to do a specific job
what is job specialisation
a document which outlines the requirements, qualifications, expertise , physical characteristics ect for a specific job
what is internal recruitment
when a vancancy is filled by someone who is existing employee of the business
what are the advantages internal recruitment (4)
quick and cheaper as advertising may be expensive
business knows person reliability and ability
person knows how organisation works
can be motivating for co workers to see them get employee and will strive for promotion
what are the disadvantage of internal recruitment (3)
no new ideas or experience
may be rivalry among co workers
may be low quality
what is external recruitment
when a vacancy is filled by someone who is not an existing employee and will be new to business
what are the ways advertising for a job can be done
local newspaper- less skill
national newspaper - senior position, local may not hv skill
specialist magazine -
online recruitment
recruitment agencies are expensive but a lot of candidates
centres run by gov- unskilled
what is a method of application
cv or resume
what is the method of selection
interview - can google answers/ cant see skills, general character
skill test, aptitude stress, personality test and grp situation test
what is a part time employee
work between 1 and 30-35 hrs a week
what is a full time employee
work 35 hrs or more a week
what are the benefits of part time employees (5)
more flexible hrs of work,
easier to ask employee to work during rush hr
easier to extend working hrs
employees are willing to accept lower pay to fit in with busy schedule
reduces business cost compared to full time
what are the limitations of part timer (5)
less likely to seek training takes longer to recruit 2 part timers than 1 less committed less likely to be promoted more difficult to communicate
what in induction training
introduction given to a new employee, explaining the business activities, customs and procedures and introducing them to their fellow workers

time consuming, wages are paid by no work done, delay start of job
settle quickly, less mistakes, better health and safety
what is on the job training
occurs by watching a more experience worker doing their job

inexpensive, training tailored to specific skills, product is being made
trainer is not as productive, trainee may pick up bad skills , may not be recognise outside company
what is off the job training
involves being trained away frm work place, usually by specialist trainers

broad range of skills, wont lose output if training in evening, can be moved throughout the company
expensive, easy for employee to leave
what is workforce planning
establishing the workforce needed by the business for foreseeable future in terms of the number and skills of employees requires
why would a business want to reduce workforce
introduction of automation, falling demand, shop closure, relocating abroad or business merge
what are the 2 ways in which you can reduce number of employees
dismissal: employment is ended against will of the employee, usually for not working in accordance with employment contract
redundancy: employees is no longer needed and so loses their job. not due to unsatisfactory work
what are the legal controls over employment issues (4)
employment contract, unfair dismissal, discrimination, health and safety
what is a contract of employment
legal agreement between an employer and employee, listing the rights and responsibilities of workers
what is industrial tribunal
type of law court that makes judgment on disagreements between companies and their employees
what is ethical decision
decision taken by a manager or a company because of the moral code observed by the firm
