What is the process of recruitment?
- The vacancy arises
- Produce the job description and person specification
- Decide whether to recruit internally or externally
- Advertise the job
- Applicants send in CV’s and/or application forms
- Produce the short list (the applicants who will be interviewed)
- Obtain references for the applicants on the shortlist
- Interview the candidates
What’s a job description and person specification?
JOB DESCRIPTION is a document which describes the purpose and nature of the job. PERSON SPECIFICATION is a document which describes the ideal candidate for a job
What’s internal recruitment?
INTERNAL RECRUITMENT means appointing an existing employee.
Advantages
Cheaper & quicker than external recruitment
The business already knows the person and vice versa.
Disadvantages
There may be better candidates outside the business
People from outside the business can bring in new ideas.
What’s external recruitment?
EXTERNAL RECRUITMENT means an employee is appointed from outside the business.
Advantages
There may be better candidates outside the business
People from outside the business can bring in new ideas.
Disadvantages
Slower & more expensive than internal recruitment
The business doesn’t really know the person until he/she works for them
What are methods of external recruitment?
- NOTICE BOARD or POSTER: in an office or shop.
- JOB CENTRES: Government offices that advertise vacancies for employers.
- EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES: private organisations that provide employers with staff. They charge a fee and usually specialise in one type of job.
- ADVERTISING: in a local or national newspaper, specialist magazine, online, etc.
- HEAD HUNTERS: agencies that provide employers with top management or professionals who are in short supply. They charge a high fee.
