Derelict land

A
  • Union Grove in the Western zone of the inner city was the site of an orphanage for many years in the 1800s
  • The building was then turned into a care home for a brief time
  • It then lay empty for many years
  • It was then turned into luxury apartments by Bancon Homes
  • They were completed in 2011
  • 2 modern townhouses were added to the site in 2018
  • Briefly after this the Chapel on the site was converted into 2 homes
  • The final additions to the site took place in 2023 when 2 blocks of low-rise flats were added

Shortage of Student accommodation

A
  • In the past years there has not been enough student housing for the amount of people studying in Aberdeen
  • So in recent years Student Housing Organisations such as Every Student and Unite Student built new student accommodation in the inner-city
  • One of the student accommodation is at Causeway end and it provides luxury housing
  • It offers en-suite studio rooms and ensuite rooms with communal areas
  • It is a listed building as it was a school during the Victorian period
  • Spring Gardens is another student accommodation in the inner-city which is purpose-built for those on a stricter budget

  • It was built in collaboration with Aberdeen City Council, Sport Aberdeen and Aberdeen University
  • It’s a sport centre with state of the art training facilities such as 2 swimming pools, indoor football pitches, gyms, badminton and squash courts, indoor and outdoor training facilities
