conflicts in the Lake District Flashcards
1
Q
explain why farmers and tourists come into conflict
A
- Tourists crossing farmland often leave gates open. This allows livestock to escape. The farmer then has to spend valuable time locating the livestock and returning them to the field
- Tourists are noisy and can disturb livestock. Pregnant ewes are particularly vulnerable to worrying by dogs. Tourists often allow their dogs off the lead in rural areas. Those dogs do not just worry the sheep, they can kill sheep and lambs. In recent years farmland around Ullswater has been affected by this, with sheep killed by tourists dogs out of control on farmland
- Tourists drop litter which is dangerous to livestock, this can lead to the need for costly veterinary treatment
- Tourists often park thoughtlessly in rural areas which blocks the narrow roads meaning farm vehicles cannot go past

Q
explain how tourists come into conflict with locals
A
- Tourists often come to the Lake District by car this leads to congestion and access problems for local people trying to go about their day to day business. The towns of Windermere and Ambleside suffer from severe congestion in the summer months
- Tourists are often noisy when leaving attractions such as pubs this can disturb the locals
- Tourists drop litter which makes the area look unsightly
- An increase in second-homes leads to the closure of local services as they are only used occasionally. This means that services such as primary schools, grocery shops and local doctors surgeries may close and the locals will have to travel further to get these services

Q
explain why quarry owners and farmers come into conflict in the Lake Distric
A
- The dust from the quarries can coat crops which stops photosynthesis. This affects their growth and therefore farmers profit
- Large quarry vehicles can block narrow roads that farm vehicles use, which reduces their access
