Realistic Conflict Theory Flashcards
What is realistic conflict theory?
Developed by Sherif (1966) argues that intergroup conflict arises as a result of conflict real or imagined by groups, for example , when two groups have a similar goal, there’s hostility produced
If there’s limited resources which two or more groups compete for. The groups become prejudiced and discriminatory towards the outgroups (Intergroup conflict) due to their common resource.
Once hostility is formed , it’s difficult to return to normal and an ongoing feud may arise
The theory is a realist theory because it proposes conflict is due to a need for resources and not something irrational
It’s a conflict theory because it rejects the common idea
