Readings: Flashcards
Practical reason
Being able to form a conception of the good and to engage in critical reflection about the planning of ones life
Control over ones environment
Private companies have a great impact on peoples environment, either positive, when bringing technology and infrastructure that improve living conditions, or negative when over-consuming resources or polluting the environment
Affiliation
Being able to live with and towards others, having the social basis of self-respect and TABLE 1 non-humilliation
Two central capabilities are mainly impacted by the way corporations make and share profits: control over the material environment and affiliation
1) consideration of control over ones environment provides investors with a useful criterion for evaluating their responsibility with regard to an investment
2) affiliation, related to self-respect and the ability to share common goals with others, is also impacted by the way companies define their salary scale and share their margin with subcontractors
ubuntu provides an alternative to liberatarian stakeholder theory that
grounds the moral responsibilities of firms towards different parties related to it, neither on ongoing or assumed contracts with these parties nor on the benefit derived from the relationship. An ubunto ethic assumes that moral responsibility is generated a priori due to the mere fact of a relationship.
ubuntu principle
Overall, Ubuntu offers a holistic framework for ethical business conduct, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and social responsibility. By embracing these principles, businesses can contribute to the well-being of individuals, communities, and society as a whole while also fostering sustainable long-term success.
According to ubuntu an action is right just insofar as it produces
Harmony and reduces discord; an act is wrong to the extent that it fails to develop community.
When it comes down to understanding harmony in ubuntu comes down to three conceptions
The first understanding of harmony is in terms of shared identity, which constitues a distinct relational theme. harmony, under this interpretation, implies a common sense of self and presupposes certain psychological attitudes of we-ness
A second way in which to develop the notion of harmony is in terms of a caring or supportive relationship i.e. a relationship that fosters good-will, which constitutes a second relational theme. As with a shared sense of identity, good-will seems to be an important component of harmonious interpersonal relations, in that it concerns attitudes that are positively oriented towards the others good and include an empathetic awareness of the others condition and a sympathetic emotional reaction to this awareness
The third understanding states that an action is right just insofar as it produces harmony and reduces discord; these actions should combine a shared sense of identity and goodwill
Corporate social responsibility
has traditionally been about the relationship of business to society,
Corporate moral responsibility
focuses on close stakeholder relationships, especially those to do with the business own shareholders. CMR is seen to encompass things like taking care of employees and customers, or not harming the environment the corporation operates in, over and above just avlue addition to shareholders
Werhane brands excessive corporate philanthropy as corporate social irresponsibility. According to him,
a companys primary obligations are to its primary stakeholders: shareholders, employees, managers, customers and suppliers. Secondary companies also have obligations to communities in which they operate although not to the same degree as towards their core stakeholders
