Reading Two Management Theory Flashcards
three aproaches of classical management theory
scientific management
bureaucracy
administrative management
who developed scientific management theory
american factory engineer, Frederick Winslow Taylor.
what is scientific management theory
using the principle of work specialization and method study, people are systematically selected for tasks that maximize their output through specialization. all about getting the optimum production.
objections to scientific management
high production, employees working harder but dont get a fair cut of the increased earning, more workers out of a job since its more efficient.
work is fragmented into tiny specialized tasks (since management now does the thinking for the worker on how to do their job) meaning more repetitive.
less ideas and creativity by workers
workers use their collective power to oppose administrative system
deskilling workers robs them of wages status and self esteem
who coined the term bureaucracy
german sociologist Max Webber
translation of bureaucracy
rule by the office
Key principals of Bureaucracy
Division of labour - clear job specialisiation
hierarchy of authority
formal rules
impersonality-rules applied uniformly
career system-officials are chosen on merit and advance through
disadvantages of bureaucracy
-lots of forward planning needed to ensure rules for every situation.
rules dont work in all situations meaning it is inefficient with irritating detail.
who developed administrative management and the five management function
Henri Fayol, french dude.
- planning
- organisation
- coordinating
- controlling
- (commanding)
what is administraitve management
like scientific management ‘best way’ but is applied to whole organisation.
who started to develop the Human Relations movement and what is it
Mary Follett, american administrator, group effort, harmonization rather than management by command.
chester Barnard also did stuff
when did the development of systematic principals take place
20th century
instead of controlling people, how does HRM use people
methods of leading -mobilizing the human energy , getting them communicating with each other, involving in decision making
what happened in the hawthrone experiments
the workers singled out to be assessed had higher production just because they were being payed attention.-hawthorne effect
who conducted the Hawthorne experiments
Elton Mayo
Bank wiring room result is a classic example of
conflict between administrative and socio political systems
what is the basic theory behind HRM
considerate supervision leads to job satisfaction leads to increased productivity
who created the heirachy of needs
abraham maslow
who came up with they theory x and theory Y
Douglas McGregor, proffessor, theory x, eveyone hates work, wants to be controlled, theory y, work is neutral, people repsond to rewards etc
who wrote how to win friends and influence people
Dale Carnegie
what did dale carnegie write about in his book
that the hR approach still manipulates people to achieve corporate goals
what is the relationship between job satisfaction and production like
questionable
another flaw in HRM
based on good human nature, may not always be so
what is quantitive approaches
uses mathamtics and stats and shit, operations management and stuff aswell
what is systems theory
derived from biologica and physical sciences, showing that an organism/organisation is a whole system which takes inputsfrom its environment and turns them into outputs, consists of subsystems
what is contingency theory
there are no universal principals of management
