Rate of Reaction Experiments Flashcards
What is the ‘reaction of hydrochloric acid and marble chips’ used to demonstrate the effect of?
Breaking the solid up into small bits
What’s the method for the reaction of hydrochloric acid and marble chips? (4)
1) Measure the volume of gas evolved with a gas syringe and take readings at regular intervals
2) Make your table + graph
3) Repeat the experiment with exactly the same volume of acid, and exactly the same mass of marble chips - but the marble more crumbled up
4) Then repeat with the same as of powdered chalk instead of marble chips
Describe how you would present the data for the reaction of hydrochloric acid and marble chips
Make a table of readings and plot them as a graph. You choose regular time intervals (x-axis) and volume on the y-axis
Hydrochloric + Marble reaction: Using finer particles means that the marble has a [ ]
Larger surface area
Hydrochloric + Marble reaction: What does increasing the surface area do?
Cause more frequent collisions so the rate of reaction is faster
What is the ‘reaction of magnesium metal with dilute HCl’ used to determine the effect of?
Concentration
Magnesium metal + HCl: What does the reaction give off? How is this measured?
Hydrogen gas. Can be measured using a mass balance
Magnesium metal + HCl: Describe what goes on each axis on the graph you would use to present the data
X-axis: Time
Y-axis: Volume
What’s the method for the reaction of Magnesium metal + HCl? (4)
1) Take readings of mass at regular intervals
2) Put the results in a table and wok out the loss in mass for each reading. Plot a graph
3) Repeat with more concentrated acid solutions, but always the same amount of magnesium
4) The volume of acid must always be kept the same
Which experiment is used to demonstrate the effect of temperature ?
Precipitation reaction
[ ] and HCl produce a cloudy precipitate
Sodium thiosulfate
Describe Sodium thiosulfate and Hcl
They are both clear solutions
They react together to form a yellow precipitate like sulfur
Describe the precipitate reaction
1) It involves watching a black mar disappear through the cloudy sulfur and timing how long it takes to go
2) The reaction is repeated for solutions at different temps. The best way to do this is by sing a water bath
3) The depth of the liquid must be kept the same each time
What else can the precipitation reaction determine the effect of? (As well as temp)
Concentration
Which experiment looks at how a catalyst affects rate of reaction?
The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
