Ionic bonding Flashcards

1
Q

What happens in ionic bonding?

A

Atoms lose/gain electrons to from charged particles, called ions, which are then strongly attracted to one another, due to their opposite charges. The 2 or more atoms are called a compound

Q

Ionic compounds all have similar properties, what are they and why? (3 and a half points)

A
  1. High melting and boiling points - due to the strong attraction between ions. It takes a lot of energy to overcome the attraction
  2. When they melt, the ions are free to move so they’ll carry an electric current
  3. They dissolve easily in water - the ions separate and are free too move in the solution (so they carry an electric current)
