Percentage Yield and Sustainable Development Flashcards

1
Q

What 3 reasons are there for why a yield can’t be 100%?

A

1) The reaction is reversible
2) Filtration
3) Unexpected reactions

Q

Why does The reaction is reversible mean that there can’t be a 100% yield?

A

1) the reactants will never be completely converted to products because the reaction goes both ways
2) Some of the products are always reacting together to change back to the original reactants
3) = a lower yield

Q

Why does Filtration mean that there can’t be a 100% yield?

A

When you filter a liquid to remove solid particles, you nearly always lose a bit of the liquid or solid
So, some of the product may be lost when it’s separated from the reaction mixture

Q

Why does Unexpected reactions mean that there can’t be a 100% yield?

A

unexpected reactions use up the reactants. this means there’s not as much reactant to make the product you want

Q

What is a reversible reaction?

A

One where the products of the reaction themselves react to produce the original reactions

Q

What is sustainable development about? Link to yield

A

Making sure that we don’t use resources than they can be replaced - there needs to be enough for future generations
For example , using as little energy as possible to create the highest product yield possible means that resources are saved. A low yield means wasted chemicals - not very sustainable
