Electrolysis Flashcards
What is electrolysis?
If you pass an electric current through an ionic substance that’s molten or in solution it breaks down into the elements it’s made of.
What is the electrolyte?
The liquid required for in order to conduct electricity. They contain free ions - they’re usually the molten or dissolved ionic substances (the free ions conduct the electricity)
For an electrical circuit to be complete there has to be [ ]. Electrons are taken away from ions at the [ ] electrode and given to other ions at the [ ] electrode. As ions gain/lose electrons they become [ ] and are released.

atoms or molecules
What is reduction?
The GAINing off electrons or the loss of oxygen
What is oxidation?
The LOSS of electrons or the gain of oxygen
Electrolysis always involves [ ].
