Metallic Structures Flashcards
Metals consist of a [ ] structure
Giant
What causes metal’s properties?
Their sea of free electrons
Where do the delocalised electrons come from?
The outer shell of every metal atom in the structure
Why are metals good conductors?
The free electrons are free to move through the whole structure so they conduct heat and electricity
What do the free electrons also do (except make the metals conductive)?
They hold the atoms together in a regular structure
There are also strong forces of [ ] between the [ ] and the negative electrons
electrostatic attraction
positive metal ions
Why can metals be bent and shaped?
The free electrons allow the layers of atom to slide over each other
Are alloys stronger or weaker than metals?
stronger
What is an alloy?
A mixture of two or more metals
Why are alloys stronger?
Different elements have different sized atoms. So when another metal is mixed with pure metal, the new metal atoms will distort the layers of metal atoms, making it more difficult for them to slide over each other. So alloys are harder
