Cemetery

A

was a popular haunt for resurrectionists (grave robbers)
- in 1814 at the height of the Napoleonic wars there was a great demand for military surgeons in the arms. this combined with the popularity of studying on the continent meant that there were around 800 anatomy students at this time. fresh corpses to sell to medical students were in high demand, to the extent that some were stolen before the funeral took place.
- this cemetery in particular has metal bars covering the top of many graves to prevent this from happening.
- this was a prestigious burial site before the construction of the necropolis with many of the city’s elite buried here.
- when ingram street was expanded, some graves were moved, however many remained buried underground.
As an example, we are now standing next to a plaque outside the cemetery, on the pavement, marking the grave of the Foulis brothers, Glasgow’s leading booksellers, printers and publishers in the age of the Enlightenment.
