in 1996 it became a gallery.
- prior to this it was a library in 1950, the royal exchange in 1834, the royal bank of Scotland in 1817 and originally in 1778 it was constructed as the home to William Cunningham, a man who made his fortunes in the transatlantic slave trade.

this whole area called the merchant city should be renamed ‘slave merchant city’ because all the key players in Glasgow’s thriving slave industry built their mansions and warehouses here.
many of the streets in this area were named after slave traders, Wilson street and Glassford Street are examples.
though in 2020 activists replaced these streets names with placards of black campaigners and slaves (eg, rosa parks street)

in front of GOMA is arguably one of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks
- sculpted by the Italian sculptor Carlo Marochetti.
