A
the term refers to a ‘market cross’. They were erected as a means to demonstrate a burgh’s right to trade. Makets were frequently held in towns and cities all over Scotland.
The Mercat Cross stands in the south -Eastern corner of Glasgow Cross.

Unicorn
A
topped by a unicorn holding a heraldic sheild. Why a unicorn?
- it’s Scotland’s national animal and it first appeared on the Scottish royal coat of arms in the 12th century!
- the unicorn represents purity and innocence, as well as masculinity and power in Celtic mythology.
- the unicorn was chosen to be Scotland’s national animal following a vote between an ‘elephant’ and a unicorn. Elephants are not native to Scotland, so that was ruled out!
- others suggested that the strength and power of a unicorn could easily overthrow the English lion in battle
- note how the unicorn is wrapped in chains, why do you think that is?
- there’s a theory as to why many of Scotland’s unicorns are chained.
1. in folklore, the unicorn was believed to be the strongest of all animals: wild, untamed and dangerous. it’s possible that the entrapment of the unicorn symbolises the power of the Scottish kings.
