RADIOLOGY OSCE Flashcards
what is the definition of radiography?
An imaging technique which uses radiation to view objects
What is meant by a Radiolucency?
- darker areas on image
- less attenuation of X-rays
what is meant by Radiopaque?
- brighter/lighter areas on image
- more attenuation of X-rays
What is the benefit of using dental radiographs?
Able to show structures not visible to the naked eye
what type of radiation are X-rays?
Ionising radiation
- remove electrons from atoms to create charged particles
What are examples of intra-oral radiographs?
- bitewings
- periapicals
- occlusal radiographs
What do size 0 bitewing receptors image?
anterior periapicals
What do size 2 bitewing receptors image?
bitewings & posterior periapicals
What do size 4 bitewing receptors image?
occlusal periapicals
what do bitewing radiographs aim to show?
Aim to show
- premolars & molars
- maxillary and mandibular teeth at same time
- interdental bone
what are the indications for taking bitewing radiographs?
- detection/monitoring of caries
- assessment of dental restorations
- detection/monitoring periodontal bone loss
what do periapical radiographs aim to show?
- 1-4 teeth
- only either maxillary/mandibular teeth
- entire crown of tooth/teeth
- entire root of tooth/teeth
- alveolar bone
- nearby anatomical structures
Aside from teeth and periodontal supporting structures, what are some other nearby anatomical structures that may be highlighted on a radiograph?
- maxillary sinus
- mental foramen
what are some indications for taking periapicals?
- detection of apical inflammation
- detection/monitoring of periodontal bone loss
- assessment of unerupted teeth
- assessment of root morphology
- evaluation of endodontic treatment
