what does the palatine fovae play a role in?
the gag reflex
where is the palatine fovae located?
sits just behind the vibrating line
what is the line that runs down the centre of the hard palate known as?
palatine raphe
what are the palatine rugae?
wrinkles at the side of the hard palate
what is the incisive papilla?
elevation of tissue just behind the two central incisors/front teeth
what is the mylohyoid ridge?
lingual surface of mandible

pterygomandibular raphe
what is the mandibular tori?
abnormal bony prominence
what are the Pterygomandibular Raphe?
- fibrous band of the buccopharyngeal fascia
what are the attachments of the pterygomandibular raphe?
posterior margin = superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle
anterior margin = buccinator muscle
what are the Fauces?
passageway from oral cavity to pharynx
what type of mucosa covers the hard palate?
highly keratinised mucosa
what type of mucosa covers the floor of mouth and alveolar processes?
lightly keratinised mucosa
what type of mucosa covers the cheeks and inner lip surfaces?
thinly keratinised mucosa
what is the APEX of the tongue?
the tip of the tongue
what are the circumvallate papillae?
two v-shaped rows of larger, flat, cup shaped papillae on the posterior dorsum of tongue
- each contains tastebuds
what are filiforme papillae?
fine, small, cone-shaped papillae covering most of the dorsum of the tongue
- gives sensation of touch
what are the foliate papillae?
large, red & leaf like located on the posterior border, lateral surfaces of tongue
- contain some taste buds
what are fungiform papillae?
deep red in colour and are distributed on dorsum of tongue
- each one of these papillae contains a taste bud
what is the median sulcus of the tongue?
slight depression in middle of dorsum of the tongue (line that runs down centre)
what is the buccal shelf?
area between buccal frenulum and anterior border of masseter
