what is the most common NSAID prescribed?

what are 7 reasons a patient should NOT be prescribed NSAIDs?
- peptic ulceration/GORD
- the elderly
- pregnancy & lactation
- renal, cardiac or hepatic impairment
- history of NSAID hypersensitivity
- asthma
- on long term steroids or already taking a NSAID
when prescribing ibuprofen, what is the recommended dosage for dental pain?
There are 200mg, 400mg or 600mg tablets
- in dentistry commonly 200mg or 400mg tablets are prescribed
- the range is normally 1.2g-1.8g daily taken in 3-4 doses
what is the maximum dosage of ibuprofen that can be prescribed (in a day)?
2.4g of ibuprofen in 24 hours
why is paracetamol sometimes a problematic drug to prescribe?
It can easily be overdosed on:
- can result in hepatic and renal impairment
If paracetamol is prescribed for dental pain, what dosage is prescribed?
500 mg tablets
- advised to take 1/2 tablets every 4-6 hours
What medications are present in co-codamol?
Paracetamol and codeine
Should there be a change to the patients diet after undergoing dental surgery?
- hot and hard foods should be avoided (numb mouth may get burnt on hot food)
- hot food causes vasodilation which encourages bleeding
- hard foods may traumatise socket
