Radiology 5: Imaging the GU Tract Flashcards
What imaging can we use?
US
CT
MR
Nuclear medicine
how does US work
Ultrasound imaging is based on production and detection of echoes.
A reflection of a beam is called an echo and occurs at the interface between two materials
why don’t we use US for renal stones?
90% of urinary tract are radiodense
what should you request for the pt to do before a bladder scan?
full bladder
what other methods can you use to evaluate the uterus or prostate?
transvaginal or transrectal
what is used for kidney stones?
CT KUB
what contrast is used in CT?
iodine
what should you check for before contrast CT?
allergy and renal function
how does an MRI work?
water molecules in our bodies align with the use of the magnetic field and once the protons return back to their normal spin, they produce a radio signal that can be filtered into an image.
Suspected ureteric colic - imaging
1st line - CT KUB
AKI and CKD - imaging
1st line - US to look for post renal obstruction
Macroscopic haemtauria - imaging
1st line - US and cytoscopy <40
UTI in adults - imaging
not usually required unless suspected complications such as infection not improving, immunocompromsised.
RIF pain in woman -imaging
US
? ovarian torsion
MRI - chronic pelvic pain
Suspected pelvic mass in women - imaging
US is first line
may use MR but if not possible, may use CT
