RA- Non-Disease Modifying Therapies Flashcards
RA non-disease modifying therapies
NSAIDs and steroids
Caveat about non-disease modifying therapies
They don’t reduce or alter disease progression, only help with symptom relief
Benefits of NSAIDs
Decrease joint pain and inflammation
Acute symptom relief
When to use NSAIDs in RA treatment
Adjunct to disease modifying agents
Benefits of steroids
Decrease joint pain and inflammation
When to use steroids in RA treatment
Bridge to disease modifier onset of action
Steroid dose for RA flares
Short-term, high doses
Steroid dose for refractory RA
Long-term, low doses (preferred to add or switch to a disease-modifying treatment)
Steroids in the guidelines
Don’t necessarily recommend starting steroids early in treatment, but frequently necessary to use steroids to alleviate symptoms
Non-pharm therapies for RA
Rest, weight loss, PT and OT (assistive devices, exercise, physiotherapy), patient education, surgery for severe RA (tendon repair, arthroplasty, tenosynovectomy)
