Q

what happens when ATP is used?

A

When ATP is used, the result is Adenosine Diphosphate (which only has two phosphate groups). To use the energy of ATP, the breaking of the bond to the third phosphate group is what releases the energy. “Food energy” is then necessary to join the third phosphate back onto a Diphosphate molecule.

Q

glycolysis:

A
  • occurs in the cytoplasm
  • anaerobic
  • reactant: 1 glucose (which will be broken down into pyruvate)
  • product: 2 pyruvate molecules (which becomes the reactant for the next step)
  • produces NADH
  • Net gain of 2 ATP from this step

Q

intermediate step

A
  • goes from the cytoplasm to the mitochondria
  • aerobic
  • -reactant: 2 pyruvate (from glycolysis)-it loses its oxygen and carbon (which produces Carbon Dioxide)
  • -It is then broken down into Accetyl CoA (two of these are produced from one glucose molecule, and they become the reactant in the next step)
  • Produces some CO2 (waste that leaves the cell)
  • Electron carriers: NADH
  • No ATP are produced in this step

Q

Kreb’s cycle

A
  • happens in the matrix of the mitochondria
  • aerobic
  • in put: Accetyl CoA
  • Out put: 4CO2 (as waste), 6NADH (they pick up a hydrogen when they pick up an electron, FAD becomes FADH2, and a net gain of two ATP (from both molecules that go through the cycle)
  • 2 ATP are produced

Q

electron transport chain

A
  • occurs on folded inner membrane of mitochondria
  • aerobic
  • inputs: hydrogen, NADH, FADH2
  • outputs: Oxygen (which serves as the final electron accepter), H2O (waste)-the hydrogen from when NADH lost an electron, it also lost a hydrogen which joins with an Oxygen carrying an electron
  • 32 ATP
