Quiz 4 Prep Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Endocrine System Responsible for? What are 6 components?
A
- Reponsible for Hormone Action
- Hypothalamus
- Pituitary gland
- THyroid gland
- Parathyroid glands
- Pancreatic islets
- Adrenal glands
2
Q
What is a Goiter?
A
- Enlargement of thyroid gland
- Typically caused by iodine deficiency which lead to decreased production of T3 & T4 and enlarges thyroid tissue
- not cancerous
*
3
Q
What is Graves Disease?
A
- Autoimmune disease of thyroid
- not cancerous
- results in production of autoimmune antibodes that attack thyroid cells
4
Q
Why are Bulging eyes a side affect of Graves disease?
A
- antibodies that attack the thyroid cells also attack connective tissues in the eyes.
- causes inflammation and swelling
5
Q
What is Hyperplasia?
A
- AKA: hypergenesis
- “hyper-over, plasis-formation”
- increase in number of cells (proliferation)
- may result in gross enlargement of an organ.
Cells increase in number but not in size (hypertrophy is enlargemnt of cell)
6
Q
How many lobes does the thyroid gland have?
A
- 3
- right
- left
- pyramidal lobe- on anterior surface, variance of size
- middle portion is ithmus
7
Q
What does the endocrine system consist of?
A
- Ductless glands
- several organs that contain hormone-secreting tissue
8
Q
What are 4 functions of hormones?
A
“HHRC”
- Help Regulate
- Control Growth and Development
- Regulate operation of reproductive systems
- Help establish circadian rhythems
9
Q
What do Hormones “help regulate?” (5)
A
“GECCS”
- glandular secretions
- Energy balance & Metabolism
- Chemical composition and volume of internal environment (interstitial fluid)
- Contraction of smooth and cardiac muscle fibers
- some immune system activities
10
Q
What is the hypothalamus’ role in the endocrine system?
A
Nervous systems connects to endocrine system via the pituitary gland (specifically the posterior lobe)
11
Q
How is the pituitary gland structured?
A
- Anterior lobe
- seperate glandular tissue
- produces and secretes it’s own hormones
- Posterior lobe
- Nerve tissue
- extension of hypothalamus
- stores oxytocin and ADH (antidiuretic hormone)
12
Q
What does the Thymus gland do?
A
- Secretes thymosins-proteins that are produced throughout the body that have diverse functions.
- A ductless gland
13
Q
A
