What is second stage of labor pain caused by?
Pelvic muscle distention, pressure on perineum, cervix, urethra, rectum
How can we reduce fear-inducing stimuli and actions?
Ensure door remains closed at all times, avoid unnecessary staff, knock, encourage coping behaviors, try not to disturb with too many questions, be calm
What are some non-pharmacologic ways we can manage labor pain?
Education classes, relaxing, massage, thermal therapy, mental distraction, birthing ball, water therapy, music
What are the benefits of childbirth education classes?
Increases familiarity and comfortability with the birthing process
When should women use slow breathing?
In labor when woman cannot walk or talk through peak of contractions. Sigh through contraction with full, easy, audible breath.
When should women use light breathing?
In active labor. More shallow and quick, pause after each exhale to avoid hyperventilation.
Why is breathing so important to teach?
It’s self-calming and encourages tension release & a state of wellbeing!
What is counterpressure?
Easing back pain in labor. Put pressure on sacral area with hand or fist throughout the contraction

Helps promote relaxation & comfort
Benefits of cold therapy
Release musculoskeletal pain & numbing may feel good
What is good about a birthing ball?
Aids movement and relaxation. Helps mom’s move upright, opens pelvis, and allows them to move throughout a contraction
What is a peanut ball?
Peanut shaped birthing ball to keep pelvis open, create space so the baby can move, and allows mom to roll or bounce.
What are the benefits of using a peanut ball?
Decreases length of labor, duration of pushing, and rate of c-sections!
