A zygote (23 chromosomes from ovum, 23 chromosomes from sperm)
What is considered an embryo?
3-8 weeks
What is considered a fetus?
9-40+ weeks. Heartbeat present.
When can a fetus be viable?
23-24 weeks
What happens at 12 weeks gestation?
Eyelids close and will reopen at about 24 weeks. Legs & arms move. Heartbeat can be heard.
What happens at fetus at 24 weeks?
Fetus covered in vernix caseosa & lanugo. Alveoli present in lungs, resp reflex movement.
What happens at fetus at 28 weeks?
Adipose tissue develops rapidly
What is defined as full term?
39.0 - 40.6 weeks
What is defined as early term?
37-38.6 weeks
When does the postpartum period begin?
Right after the placenta is delivered, lasts until 6 weeks after.

Subtract 3 months and add 7 days - take into consideration year
What occurs weeks 25-28?
More likely to survive outside uterus now, fat is under skin, head hair is abundant
