When are pap tests needed?
21 years old, Q3 years
When do you do an HPV test with pap?
Offer if over 30 years, then Q5 if negative
When do you get the HPV vaccine?
ages 9 through 45 to prevent cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and anal cancers
What happens in the follicular cycle of menstruation?
Rise in estrogen stimulates endometrial growth
What happens during ovulation (menstruation)?
Progesterone rises
What happens during luteal phase (menstruation)?
Withdrawal of progesterone causes endometrium to break down - bleeding occurs
What are symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome)?
Irritability and mood swings, breast tenderness, headaches
What is dysmenorrhea?
Pain associated with periods.
What causes cramping?
Prostaglandins causes muscle contraction, ischemia, and hypoxia - causes cramps, diarrhea, N/V
How can we treat cramps?
Oral contraceptives, NSAIDs, heat
What are symptoms of fibrocystic breast changes? (benign)
Pain, tenderness, engorgement (usually both boobs)
What are markings of fibroadenoma?
1-3cm palpable mass, gradual growth. Cyclic tenderness (remains same size)
How common are breast cancers?
1 in 8 women will develop in her lifetime
