Quiz 1 Part 1 Review (Carbo) Flashcards
What functional group is found in alcohols?
Hydroxyl (-ol)
What functional groups are found in acids?
Carboxyl (-oic acid)
What function group is found in carboxyl groups?
Amino (amino-)
What functional group is found also in alcohols (ATP)?
Phosphate (phospho-)
What functional group has a reaction and a hydrogen attached?
Aldehyde (-al)
What functional group has two reactions attached?
Ketone (-one)
What does a dehydration synthesis reaction do?
A hydroxyl group (-OH) from a smaller molecule reacts with a hydrogen atom from another molecule. A covalent bond forms between the two monomers.
What is the function of Starch?
It’s a storage of nutrition for plants.
What is the function of Cellulose?
It’s another storage for carbohydrates found in plants. Can’t be broken down.
What is the function of fibre?
It’s to help with the proper digestion of foods. (Cows and sheep can break it down easily)
What is the function of Gylcogen?
It’s a carbohydrate storage for plants, and humans, it maximizes space.
What are Carbohydrates?
They are the body’s most important source of energy and make up the largest component in most diets.
What are Deoxyribose?
They are sugar compounds found in DNA.
Where are Fruictose found?
They’re found in fruits and much sweeter than glucose.
Where are Lactose found?
They’re found in milk.
What is Glucose?
They are the most common monosaccharide, primary energy fuel of the cell.
What are Oligrochirdes?
They are 2 or 3 monosaccharides?
What is Chitin?
It is made up of hard exoskeleton of insects and crustaceans.
