Metabolism And Energy Flashcards
What is Metabolism?
It involves a series of reactions that transforms matter and energy in the cell.
What is Catabolism?
It is the breakdown of compounds to release energy.
What is Anabolism?
It is the use of energy to build larger molecules.
What is Energy?
It is the capacity to do work and can be stored in chemical bonds. (Ex ATP).
What is an Exergonic?
It is a reaction that releases energy.
What is an endergonic?
It is a chemical reaction that uses energy.
Exergonic Reaction graph
Delta G < 0
Reaction is spontaneous
Endergonic Reaction Graph
Delta G > 0
Reaction is not spontaneous
What is Cellular Respiration?
It includes all of the chemical reactions that provide energy (ATP) for life.
What does Glycogen do in Animal Cells?
It breaks down to release glucose into the bloodstream.
What does Glycogen do in Plant Cells?
Starch would break down into maltose then glucose.
How much energy is used to make ATP?
Only 36% of energy from glucose is used. The rest is lost as heat to help maintain our body temperature.
How does glucose release 2 molecules of ATP and where is it?
It occurs in the cytoplasm and one molecule of glucose is split into molecules of pyruvate which would release 2 molecules ATP.
No oxygen is required.
How much ATP is produced within the Kreb Cycle and ETC?
It produces 34 molecules of ATP overall for original molecules of glucose. Oxygen would be required. It occurs in the mitochondria of eukaryotic cells.
What is Aerobic Respiration?
It is the cellular respiration that uses oxygen (Krebs and ETC)
What is Anaerobic Respiration?
It is the cellular respiration in the absence of oxygen that produces some ATP (Glycolysis)
