Lipids Lesson Review Flashcards
What are Lipids?
They are a group of organic compounds with an oily, greasy, or waxy consistency. They’re also a concentrated source of energy.
Lipids tend to be what?
Hydrophobic (water repellent)
What is Saturated?
It means full of hydrogen, ex butter.
What is Unsaturated?
Has less hydrogen and have double bonds.
What do Phospholipids form?
They form the structural framework of cellular membranes, ex the plasma membrane.
What do Fats Absorb?
They absorb shocks. For example organs that are prone to bumps and shocks like the kidney.
What are Lipids a Source of?
They are a source of metabolic water. During respiration, stored lipids metabolize for energy producing water and carbon dioxide.
What do stored lipids Provide?
They provide insulation in extreme environments. Increased body fat levels in water reduce heat losses to the environment.
What are the three Glyceride Fats?
- Monoglyceride
- Diglycerides
- Triglycerides
What is the Triglyceride Structure?
Most common fat in plants and animals, and are joined by dehydration synthesis.
What is the difference/similarity between an Ester and Glycosidic
- Ester: between hydrogen group and carboxyl
- Both are condensations
- Glycosidic: between 2 hydroxyl groups
Difference between Fats and Oils?
- Fats are solid
- Oils are liquids
Saturated Fatty Acids:
- Solid at room temp
- Only single bonds between C atoms
- Gives a straight shape to the fatty acids
What is the Hydrogenation process?
- An industrial process
- Hydrogen atoms are added to the double bonds in unsaturated triacylglycerols
What are fats believed to cause (Healthy diet)?
To raise blood cholesterol levels.
Where are fats found in foods?
- Fatty meats
- Poultry skin
- Coconut and palm oils etc
What is the molecule in the phosphate group?
It is the phospholipid molecule.
Where is the phospholipid molecule found in?
Cell membranes
What is the phosopholipid Bilayer?
It is the phosphate end of the molecule, its polar and attracted to water (hydrophilic). While the fatty acid end is non-polar (hydrophobic).
