Questionnaires and Interviews Flashcards
What are self report techniques?
methods of gathering data where participants provide information about themselves without interference from
the experimenter
what are questionnaires?
a non experimental, self report method where p’s record their thoughts and feelings in a set of pre determined q’s
what’s an open question?
Give the p’s the freedom to say what they want without being restricted to a fixed answer
Give an example of an open question?
How much do you enjoy p.e ,what do you enjoy about it and why?
what’s a closed question?
Provides a fixed set of response to choose from e.g., yes or no
Examples of closed question?
Liket Scales
Respondent indicates agreement with statement on scale
e.g.
Pe should be complulsary until 18
1. 2. 3. 4. 5
strongly agree. strongly disagree
Examples of closed q’s?
Semantic differential scales
-respondant identified a value which represents their strength of feelings
e.g. How important do you think eating exercise is
5. 4. 3. 2. 1
Very important. Not important
Examples of closed questions?
Fixed Choice Option
Includes a list of options that respondents choose
e.g. how often do you excersise
Never, once a year, once a month, once a day
What is quantitative data?
numerical data
concerned with averages and differences
What is qualitative data?
non-numerical data
attitudes and belifs
Quantitative data strengths?
quick and easy to analyse
easier to establish trends
quantitative weekends?
lack debth
limited range of responses
what are qualitative data strength?
Rich in debth
New ideas
Qualitative data weekness?
difficult to analyse
difficult to find patterns
what are interviews?
Where researchers ask q’a in real-time, can be by telephone or face to face
what are structured interviews?
A pre-determined set of q’s that interviews stick to
strengths of structured interviews?
Requires less skill
Easier to analyse
can be repeated
Quantitive collected and analyse
qualitative data
weaknesses of structured interviews?
-Reliability may be affected by different intervals weres asking different q’s of r asking same q in different ways
-restricted answers
-Reliability affect by same interview behaving differently on diff occasions
what is a semi structured interview?
interviewers have some pre determined q’s and some they develop on the spot
Strengths of a semi-structured interview?
easier to analyse
easily repeated
qualitative data
information accessed may not be revealed by pre determined
weakness of a semi structured interview?
Interviewer bias when developing responses
Difficult to analyse data as more of it
different q’s interpreted in diff ways he diff participants
requires more skill
What’s an unstructured interview?
The interviewer makes up all q’s on the spot, no plan only ideas
Strengths of unstructured?
In debth qualative data
info accessed that may not be revealed by pre determined q’s
Unstructured interview weekness?
Interviewer bias when developing responses
reliability affected by diff interviewer asking diff q’s
difficult to analyse as there’s much more data
different q’s interpreted differently by different p’s
Requires more skill
