Locations of reaserch Flashcards
Lab, Field, quazi and online
What are lab studies?
-A study done in a controlled environment in order for variables to be controlled (Only IV is being controlled)
-Researcher will manipulate variables and measure the effects
-Usually 2 or more conditions as were looking for differences
Key features of a lab study?
-Usually p’s know they are in a study (may be deceived about true aims)
-Standardised procedures are used in order for everyone to share the same experience
-2 condition as experimenters manipulating at least one IV and mesiring at least 1 DV
In a lab the more people we test means?
The more generalisable the results
Strengths of a lab study?
-Establish a cause and effect relationship as variables are controlled
-Highly objective and less susceptible to subjectivity and interpretation as data collected is quantitative
-Reliable and replicable
Limitations of a lab study?
-Low ecological validty
-Screw you or please you affect/ social desirability
-Experimenter effects
What is a feild experiment?
The experiment takes place in a natural environment e.g. street, school or hospital (may be familiar to p’s)
-Involves the IV being directly manipulated so if their is no IV then it isnt a feild experiment
Similaritys of feild and lab?
Both IV and DV are being measured
Differences of feild and lab?
The location
lab in controlled
feild in natural
Stengths of feild experiments?
-High mundane realism
-High ecological validty
-Reduce of demand charactaristics as p’s dont know their in study till after
-If IV and DV are controlled then a cause and effect relationship can be established
Limitations of a feild experiment?
-Lacks validty as extrenious and confounding variables aren’t controlled
-Still a risk of demand characteristics
-Unethical
-Unreliabilty/ hard to replicate
What is a quazi experiment?
An experiment when the IV is not under direct control of the researcher
What are the 2 different types of quasi experiments?
-Natural
-Difference
What is a natural quasi experiment?
-The IV isn’t in control pf the researcher as the Iv is a naturally occurring event which cant be manipulated e.g. a natural disaster
-DV is being measured and there are 2 or more conditions
-Can’t be labeled as a true experiment
-Can take place in lab or field
Example of natural quazi experiment?
Investigation of how prolonged separation from parents can affect the emotional development of preschool children
-How can an earthquake effects people mental health
-Charlton 2000, weather the TV had an affect on anti-social behaviour
What is a difference quasi experiment?
-IVs not under direct control and participants can’t be randomly allocated
-The IV is something pre-existing between participants e.g. gender
