Q

What are lab studies?

A

-A study done in a controlled environment in order for variables to be controlled (Only IV is being controlled)
-Researcher will manipulate variables and measure the effects
-Usually 2 or more conditions as were looking for differences

Q

Key features of a lab study?

A

-Usually p’s know they are in a study (may be deceived about true aims)
-Standardised procedures are used in order for everyone to share the same experience
-2 condition as experimenters manipulating at least one IV and mesiring at least 1 DV

In a lab the more people we test means?

Q

Strengths of a lab study?

A

-Establish a cause and effect relationship as variables are controlled
-Highly objective and less susceptible to subjectivity and interpretation as data collected is quantitative
-Reliable and replicable

Q

What is a feild experiment?

A

The experiment takes place in a natural environment e.g. street, school or hospital (may be familiar to p’s)
-Involves the IV being directly manipulated so if their is no IV then it isnt a feild experiment

Q

Stengths of feild experiments?

A

-High mundane realism
-High ecological validty
-Reduce of demand charactaristics as p’s dont know their in study till after
-If IV and DV are controlled then a cause and effect relationship can be established

Q

Limitations of a feild experiment?

A

-Lacks validty as extrenious and confounding variables aren’t controlled
-Still a risk of demand characteristics
-Unethical
-Unreliabilty/ hard to replicate

13
Q

What is a natural quasi experiment?

A

-The IV isn’t in control pf the researcher as the Iv is a naturally occurring event which cant be manipulated e.g. a natural disaster
-DV is being measured and there are 2 or more conditions
-Can’t be labeled as a true experiment
-Can take place in lab or field

Q

Example of natural quazi experiment?

A

Investigation of how prolonged separation from parents can affect the emotional development of preschool children
-How can an earthquake effects people mental health
-Charlton 2000, weather the TV had an affect on anti-social behaviour

Q

What is a difference quasi experiment?

A

-IVs not under direct control and participants can’t be randomly allocated
-The IV is something pre-existing between participants e.g. gender

Q

Example of a difference quazi?

A

-Sheridan and King, m and f p’s give shocks of increasing levels to a puppy found male obedience at 54% and female 100%
-IQ levels between younger and older people

17
Q

Strengths of quasi experiment?

A

-High ecological validity
-Natural- allows experimenter to study things which may may not be able to be studied any other wet as well as the ability to study real products

18
Q

Limitations of quasi experiment?

A

-Unable to force natural experiments to occur
-Can’t establish a cause and effect relationship
-Participant variables as no random allocation
-extraneous variables
-hard to replicate
-low generalisability and bias sample

19
Q

What is online research?

A

Collecting data through questionnaires/the internet

20
Q

Strengths of online research?

A

-Large sample
-Diverse
-Cheap

21
Q

Limitations of online research?

A

-Potentially bias sample
-Limited research method
-Social desirability
-ethical issue
