Case studys Flashcards
What is a case study?
an indebth study of one person or a single group
or a study of an instetution
Is a case study an experimental or non experimental technique?
Non experimental- no iv or dv
What can occur in a case study?
-a detailed account about the persons behaviour and interpretations
-also they could potentially use lab experiments, questionaries’, a psychometric test or observations
An example of a case study to do with dementia and an individuals life. Can you explain the process?
1- carry out a structured observation to show the behaviour of the individual
2- asses the cognitive ability with a psychometric test
3- test the co-ordination’s with a lab experiment
4- conduct interview with friends and family of the person
5- correlate 2 or more variable e.g. person’s alertness based on number of hours of sleep
Strengths of a case study?
-Gaining insight and awareness of certain topics
-Some things can only be investigated by a case study
Limitations of a case study?
-Can be unethical
-Can be subject to interpretation
-Data analysation
-Impractical
The validity of a case study?
depends on methods used as a part of the study
What is the validity triangulation?
if the case study uses a questionnaire, observation and an interview we can compare our findings from all 3 mesures. If our methods are valid results should all agree with each other
Diagram of the validity triangle?
- observation

Reliability of case study’s?
-qualatitve data is often open to interpritation, this is an issue as it as we may not find specific answer we are looking for as its subjective and open to bias
How to overcome reliability of a case study?
Inter observer reliability- if they both agree at least 80% then it will have inter observer reliability.
