Questionnaires Flashcards
What are questionnaires?
A set of written questions that can be answered easily
What are closed-ended questions?
They offer a choice of answers from a number of alternatives that produced quantitative data
What are open-ended questions?
Questions that don’t resist the respondents choice of answers and produce qualitative data
What are two strengths of questionnaires?
They are quick and they produced large samples
What is a strength of closed-ended questions?
They produce quantitative data that is easy to statistically analyse
What is a strength of open-ended questions?
The answers will provide richer, fuller detail answers and the respondent doesn’t feel constrained in their answers
What are two limitations of questionnaires?
There is social desirability and there may be bias d samples as they are only suitable for people who can read and are willing to take part
What is a limitation of closed-ended questions?
They limit the respondents choices and important information may be missed
What is a limitation of open-ended questions?
Very often their answers do not fit into any particular category and analysing responses is hard
What does the researcher begin with to design a questionnaire?
The aim
How can he make sure that the questions are suitable for the participants?
By conducting a pilot study
What three things must the researcher consider when designing questions?
They must be clear, simple and mean the same thing to all respondents, leading questions should be avoided and ambiguity should be there (the questions make sense and worded in a way that is appropriate to the target audience)
