Correlation Flashcards
What is a correlational analysis?
A technique for analysing data
What does a correlation measure?
The strength and direction of a relationship between variables. It is between 0 and 1 and it can be + or -. Therefore it requires quantitative data
What are the variables called?
Co-variables
What are the three types of correlations?
Positive, negative and zero correlation
What is a positive correlation?
As one variable increases the other increases or as one variable decreases the other decreases
What is a negative correlation?
As one variable increases the other decreases
What is zero correlation?
There is no relationship
What is a correlational coefficient?
A numerical measure of the strength of the relationship between two or more variables. It varies between -1 and +1
What is a weak correlation?
0-0.3
What is a moderate correlation?
0.3-0.7
What is a strong correlation?
0.7-1
What are two strengths of a correlation?
It can highlight the need for further research and it can be used when other methods are unethical
What are two limitations of a correlation?
It is only useful for linear relationships and doesn’t establish the cause and effect
What is the difference between a correlation and an experiment?
In an experiment the researcher manipulates the IV to measure the effect on the DV. In a correlation, there is no manipulation of a variable therefore we can’t establish the cause and effect
