Hypothesis Flashcards
What is the IV?
The variable which is believed to affect another. This is the variable that the researcher manipulates and changes
What is the DV?
The variable which is likely to be affected by the IV. These are the results that are measured by the researcher
What is the difference between the aim and the hypothesis?
An aim states what you are investigating, a hypothesis is a prediction of what you think will happen
What is a null hypothesis?
It states that the IV doesn’t affect the DV
What is an experimental hypothesis?
It states that there will be differences between the results and it will be due to the IV
What are the two types of experimental hypothesis?
A directional hypothesis and a non-directional hypothesis
What does a directional hypothesis predict?
It predicts that the IV will have an effect and what the effect will be
What is another name for a directional hypothesis?
One tailed hypothesis
What does a non-directional hypothesis predict?
The IV will have an effect but doesn’t predict the direction of the effect
What is another name for a non-directional hypothesis?
A two tailed hypothesis
What word must you include in a hypothesis?
