Experimental Methods Flashcards
What are the characteristics of a lab experiment?
The researcher controls as many variables as possible and it is done in a controlled environment
What are three strengths of a lab experiment?
There is high control, replication and cause and effect is established
What are two limitations of a lab experiment?
There is a lack of ecological validity and it may be affected by demand characteristics
What are the characteristics of a field experiment?
It is carried out in a natural setting but the IV is manipulated by the researcher
What are two strengths of a field experiment?
It is reducing demand characteristics and there is a greater ecological validity
What are two limitations of a field experiment?
It is more difficult to control variables and there is ethical issues such as privacy and deception
What are the characteristics of a natural experiment?
It is carried out in a real life setting and the IV occurs naturally
What are two strengths of a natural experiment?
It permits aspects of life that cannot be manipulated in any way and it has higher ecological validity
What’s two limitations of a natural experiment?
There is little control and it cannot be replicated
What are the characteristics of a quasi experiment?
The IV occurs naturally as it studies inborn characteristics. It is based on existing differences between people for example gender and age
What is a strength of a quasi experiment?
It is carried out in a co trolled condition
What is a limitation of a quasi experiment?
Participants cannot be randomly allocated
