Quantitative & Qualitative dataData Flashcards
what is quantitative data?
data expressed numerically and statistically
how is quantitative data analysed?
statistically and measures of central tendency e.g. mean
4 Ao1s for quantitative data
-deals with ‘what’ rather than ‘why’
-data that is quantifiable
-data often drawn from controlled experiments
can often use closed questions
what is qualitative data?
data can be expressed in detailed descriptions, views, images
where might qualitative data come from?
case studies, open questions
how is qualitative data analysed?
could be through thematic analysis
STRENGTHS of quantitative data
- gives statistical data-can be further tested to see how far results are due to chance
- easier to analyse
- viewed as more scientific and objective tahn qualitative data
- uses operational variables-easier to repeat
WEAKNESSES of quantitative data
- lacks detail-often superficial
- produce narrow, unrealistic inf-only focuses on small fragments of behaviour
- can’t be turned into qual data
STRENGTHS of qualitative data
- detailed
- can be converted into quantitative data
- access to emotional data-can delve into behaviours beyond statistics
WEAKNESSES of qualitative data
- more difficult to analyse
- difficult to compare
- harder to replicate due to lack of control in methods
- viewed as less scientific
name 3 types of quantitative data?
nominal, ordinal, interval/ratio
what is nominal data?
category data e,g, brown eyes/blue eyes/green eyes
what is ordinal data?
ordered categories and the distances between the categories is not known e.g. likert scale where one persons ‘I’ could be different to anothers
what is interval data?
scale data e.g. test scores, weight, height, temperature with set intervals between each point
