Designs Flashcards
what is an independent measures design?
ppts only take part in 1 condition of the experiment (requires 2 separate groups)
what is a repeated measures design?
1 group of ppts take part in both conditions of experiment
what is a matched pairs design?
ppts matched in each condition for characteristics that may have effect on their performance e.g IQ
what are the STRENGTHS of an independent measures design?
- avoids order effects-if ppt involved in more than 1 tests, may become bored-effects validity
- less demand characteristics-do only 1 condition
what are the WEAKNESSES of an independent measures design?
- more people needed for this design
- differences between ppts in groups may affect results -variations i n age/sex/social background(ppt variables)
what are the STRENGTHS of repeated measures design?
- avoids problem of ppt variables
- fewer people are needed
what are the WEAKNESSES of repeated measures design?
- order effects are more likely to occur
- demand characteristics more likely-ppt may guess aim as they take part in all conditions
what are STRENGTHS of matched pairs design?
- reduces ppt variables (people are matched)
- avoids order effects
- less likely to see demand characteristics(only do 1 condition)-therefore less likely to guess purpose
what are WEAKNESSES of matched pairs design?
- very time-consuming-trying to find closely matched pairs
- impossible to match people exactly-may be ppt variables
- requires more ppts
