What does replacing the use of animals mean?

A

Before using an animal in research other ways of studying the area must be considered such as using him and it computer simulation

Q

What does refinement alternatives mean?

A

Procedures that are likely to cause pain or discomfort sh9uod be performed only on animals that have been adequately anaesthetised and analgesics should be used before and after such procedures to.kinimisr pain and distress wherever possible

Q

What are ETHICAL STRENGTHS in animal research?

A
  • its possible to do things to non-human animals that would he unethical in humans
  • uses lab bred animals only
  • some animals studies are not in lab setting- better for animals
  • some animals research used to develop gjerpqies to help humans e.g. pavlov-developed systematic desensitization

Q

What are ETHICAL WEAKNESSES to animal studies?

A
  • argument that things we wouldn’t do to humans should also not be done to animals-unethical
  • we don’t know if every experiment is beneficial
  • if animals ate going to suffer after experiment- there should be facilities to humanely euthanize them

Q

STRENGTHS of practical issues when conducting animal research?

A
  • possible to have more control over EV wheb using animals compared to humans- more certainty to cause and effect
  • animals reproduce faster than humans- we can study effects of something such as genes over generations
  • animals easier to handle and control

Q

WEAKNESSES of practical issues in animal research?

A
  • human brain more complex than animals-not representative to humans
  • may be issues of cost
  • social animals e.g monkeys shouldn’t be used in experiments or kept in isolation
