Quantitative- factorial designs Flashcards
What is a factorial designs
- a design that has more than one independent variable
vocab
a 2-factor study with 3 levels of one factor and 2 levels of the other factor is a 3x2 design and it has 6 conditions
main effect
A main effect is the effect of one independent variable on the dependent variable.
- there is one main effect for each dependent variable.
- eg. a study to see how tutoring and extra homework help to improve math scores. As there are two independent variables (tutoring and extra homework), there are two main effects:
1. The effect tutoring has on math scores.
2. The effect extra homework has on math scores.
(look across and down)
interaction effect
The two independent variables can also work together on the dependent variable. In that case, the effects are called interaction effects.
simple main effect definition
the overall effects of an independent variable
simple interaction effects definition
when the effect of one IV variable depends on the level of another IV
example of interaction with no main effects
Godden & Baddeley (1975): Is learning context-dependent? Four conditions: Learn on land – recall on land Learn on land – recall under water Learn under water – recall on land Learn under water – recall under water
mixed factorial with counterbalancing
Riskind & Maddux (1993):
Between-Ss variable: High self-efficacy vs. low self-efficacy
Within-Ss variable: “Looming”
DV: Fear
Main effect- high self efficacy were less afraid, looming people more afraid
Interaction effect: more fear with looming but more for people with low self efficacy
as the number of conditions increases…
the number of participants needed also goes up
for between subject designs
within subject design participant number
all participants can take place in each condition
2x2 mixed design (participants needed)
eg. Interested in recall and whether listening to mozart or silence on rock music effects word recall.
BUT
Also intersted if picture stimuli makes a difference or not
factors: music and typle of list (visual or not)
levels:
music- rock, mozart or silence
list type- with words or with visual stimuli and words
between subjects: pictures vs words
