Qualified
Limited; restricted. Unable to give the candidate his full support, the mayor only gave him a qualified endorsement.
Quiescent
At rest; dormant; temporarily inactive. Natives feared returning back to their land until the volcano had been quiescent for at least two years.
Rarefied
Made less dense (gas) The mountain climbers had trouble breathing in the rarefied environment.
Retalcitrant
Obstinately stubborn; determined to resist authority; unruly. Which animal do you think is more recalcitrant, a pig or a mule?
Recondite
Abstruse (difficult to understand); profound; secret. He read many recondite articles in order to put together his thesis.
Refractory
Stubborn; unmanageable. The refractory horse was removed from the race when he refused to obey his jockey.
Refute
Disprove. Witnesses to the crime were able to refute the defendants testimony.
Relegate
Banish to an inferior position; delegate; assign. After Bob was late to work 3 days in a row, his boss relegated him to a lesser position.
Reproach
Express disapproval or disappointment. He couldn’t do anything without imagining how the look on his mother’s face would reproach him afterwards.
Reprobate
Person hardened in sin; devoid of a sense of decency. After he attacked his friend he became reprobate.
Repudiate
Disown; disavow. After separating from her husband, she swore to repudiate all his debt.
Reticent
Reserved; uncommunicative; inclined to silence. Daniel preferred reticent undergrads than loquacious ones.
Reverent
Respectful; worshipful. Though I bow my head in church, sometimes I don’t feel reverent.
