Discordant; inharmonious. Do the students in the symphony enjoy the cacophonous sound they make while tuning their instruments?
Capricious
Unpredictable; fickle. Jill was capricious, she changed her boyfriends as she changed her clothes.
Castigation
Punishment; severe criticism. Sensitive to criticism, Daniel could not bear the castigation that he found in certain reviews.
Catalyst
Person or thing that causes a reaction. She was his catalyst for change.
Caustic
Burning; sarcastically biting. The critics caustic remark hurt the actor greatly.
Chicanery
Trickery; deception. The sneaky lawyer depended on chicanery to win the case.
Cogent
Convincing. As Bob was overweight, he had several cogent reasons to diet.
Commensurate
Corresponding in extent, degree, amount etc; proportionate.
compendium
Brief, comprehensive summary. The text can serve as a compendium of the tremendous amount of new material being developed in the field.
contrite
Feeling or expressing remorse or affected by guilt; pertinence. Her contrite tears did not influence the judge.
convoluted
coiled around; involved; intricate. His argument was so convoluted that few of us could follow it intelligently.
Craven
Cowardly. Bob’s craven refusal to join the protest was criticized by his comrades.
Colloquially
Not formally or literary.
