punnet squares + blood Flashcards
1
Q
Rh factor
A
- type of protein on the surface of RBC
- positive if have, neg. if not
2
Q
Rh disease
A
- when Rh neg. mom has Rh pos. baby, the Rh antigens enter mom
- then mom makes antibodies against Rh, causing hemolytic anemia by destroying fetal RBC
3
Q
how to prevent Rh sensitization
A
- blood test (antibody screen) detects Rh antibodies
- Rh immunoglobulin (made of donated blood) targets Rh pos. cells and prevents antibody production
- at 28th week and 72 hrs after
4
Q
codominance
A
- both are expressed, not blend
- use superscripts, variable for trait
- when doing genotype, write out the letters
5
Q
incomplete dominance
A
- results in blend (third allele formed)
- use superscripts, variable for trait
- when doing genotype, write out the letters
6
Q
mendel’s law of segregation
A
- organisms inherit two copies of genes; one from each parent
7
Q
mendel’s conclusions
A
- traits are passed on as heredity units called “factors” - we call GENES
- for each trait (like flower colour) an organism carries TWO alleles
- one from each parent
bc parents only donate ONE copy of each gene in their gametes (happens during meiosis)
8
Q
pedigrees used for
A
- passing of alleles
- patterns of transmission of trait
