digestive system pt2 Flashcards
1
Q
parts of the small intestine
A
- duodenum
- jejenum
- ileum
2
Q
duodenum
A
- 10 inches
- gallbladder and pancreas have ducts into duodenum
- most chemical digestion happens here (enzymes)
3
Q
pancreas
what is what it secretes called?
A
- secretes sodium bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid (protect intestines)
- secretes pancreatic juice with enzymes to continue chemical digestion (trypsin, pancreatic lipase, pancreatic amylase)
4
Q
gall bladder
why is wht. it makes important?
A
- stores bile produced by liver
- biles emulsifies fats allowing fat enzymes (lipases) to work
5
Q
gallstones
A
crystallization of bile components (mostly cholesterol)
6
Q
jejenum
A
- 4-5 meters long
- some digestion/absorption of nutrients
- longitudinal/circular muscles perform peristalsis
- has structures called villi
7
Q
villi
A
- fingerlike projections on small intestine lining
- more surface area to absorb nutrients
- villi have microvilli to increase absorption
- perform active transport and passive transport
8
Q
active transport vs passive transport
A
- villi can perform both
- active transport: transport of nutrients requiring energy
- passive transport: transport of nutrients not requiring energy
9
Q
ileum
A
- 2-3 meters long
- most absorption of nutrients (has villi)
- absorbs B12 and bile salts
10
Q
caecum
A
- first part of large intestine
- “dead end”
- appendix attached
- seperated from ileum by ileocaecal valve
11
Q
large intestine
wht doese it have? howlong?
A
- 1.5 meters long
- absorbs water through osmosis
- passes waste material from body
- more than 500 species of bacteria
- has colonic bacteria (like e. coli) that produce vitamin K, vitamin B12, thiamine, riboflavin
12
Q
parts of large intestine
A
- caecum
- colon (ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid)
- rectum
- anus
13
Q
rectum
how long?
A
- last 20 cm
- holds indigestible materials (e.g. cellulose) until egested
- peristaltic waves expel feces through anal canal
- stretch receptors trigger contractions when rectum is full
14
Q
diagnostics
A
- barium enema
- endoscopy
15
Q
barium enema
A
- barium solution inserted in anus to provide contrast for x-ray
- xray shows barium fluid moving through large intestine
