cladistics/phylogeny Flashcards
1
Q
when new species discovered, taxonomists…
A
- describe characteristic features
- determine relationship to known species w/ similar traits
- give it unique binomial name
2
Q
phylogeny
A
- to reconstruct evolutionary relationships in “family tree” based on inherited characteristics+history
- based on morphology, DNA, fossil record
- family tree is called cladogram
3
Q
cladograms
A
- hypothesis of evolutionary relationship (phylogeny) of different species
- focus on shared derived traits
- use branching approach
- assume species descended from common ancestor
4
Q
cladistics
A
method of determining evolutionary relationships based on presence or absence of derived traits
5
Q
derived traits
A
trait that has evolved relatively recently with respect to the species
6
Q
synapomorphy
A
derived trait shared by two or more species/groups
7
Q
daughter lineages
A
when speciation occurs, the ancestor line splits into two or more
8
Q
speciation
A
when group within species seperates and develops its own traits
