Clinical relevance
The pterygomandibular space is found within the INFRATEMPORAL FOSSA.
Its boundaries are
Medial pterygoid muscle
Mandibular ramus
Parotid gland
Pterygomandibular raphe.
The contents of the pterygomandibular space is————-Inferior alveolar neuro-vascular bundle (nerve, vein, artery).
Lingual nerve
Sphenomandibular ligament
Loose connective tissue.
It communicates with the
Submandibular space
Parapharyngeal space
Retropharyngeal space
The clinical importance is that is the only practical place the Inferior block injection can be preformed to anethetis the inferior alveolar nerve.
Possible issues after the Inferior Block injection
Transient facial paralysis
Intra vascular injection
Needle tract infection
